Fearnley rolls on with another Marathon win

10 May 2009 18:00 AEST

Australian athlete Kurt Fearnley has won the Seoul International Wheelchair Marathon for the third time.

Fearnley edged out local hero Suk-Man Hong of the Korean Republic and South African Ernst van Dyk in a bunched sprint of six, finishing in a time of 1 hour 29 minutes 49 seconds.

After a tough six week schedule that has seen him win in Paris, London and now Seoul, Fearnley is looking forward to heading home for a well-earned break.

“I’ve managed three from three this year and it’s nice to be on a bit of a roll, but I’m looking to forward to getting home and giving my arms a rest” Fearnley said.

“It’s been a really successful period for me and one that’s ticked a few career goals. That was my last race for a while so I gave it everything I had” he added.

Since his runner-up finish in the corresponding race last year, Fearnley has been undefeated on the road with four victories over 10km to go with his six marathon wins, highlighted by last month’s London Marathon, a third straight New York title in November and Beijing Paralympic Gold.

Fearnley will now have a four month break from international competition, spending his first winter in Australia since 1997.

“My schedule this year has a couple of tough book ends with three marathons early and two or three at the end.

I normally spend a month or two in the US over their summer but this year I’ve got a few things to achieve out off racing so I’ve decided to take a break and enjoy an Aussie winter.

With the way things are lining up, I might be able to race a couple of times in Australia this year which will be a nice change. While I enjoy racing anywhere, there’s nothing like a good home crowd cheering you on.”

Fearnley makes it three in a row in New York

2 November 2008

Australian Paralympic champion Kurt Fearnley has won his third straight New York Marathon.

Fearnley crossed the finish line in a time of 1 hour 44 minutes 51 seconds, more than a minute ahead of his nearest rival Masazumi Soejima of Japan with Aaron Gordian of Mexico third.

Battling fierce head winds and near freezing temperatures, Fearnley's time was more than 15 minutes outside of the course record he set in 2006. He is the first athlete to win three New York titles and could not be happier.

"That was hard work. To finish the year off with a win here is amazing. I haven't raced in conditions like that in years, it was a shock to the system and reminded me of winter back in Carcoar" Fearnley said.

"I love this city and I love this race, that's three in-a-row now, I'd like to make it a few more."

Fearnley, Soejima and Gordian broke away from the pack early in the race, with the trio opening up a two minute gap over the field by the half way mark. Fearnley then made his move and over the next 10km he opened up a two minute gap of his own, leaving the duo in his wake. With Fearnley tiring over the last 5km, Soejima managed to bridge the gap slightly but could not get close enough, finishing 1 minute and 20 seconds behind the Australian.

The win caps off a memorable year for Fearnley, with a Gold medal in the Beijing Paralympic marathon, three individual track medals at the games, and a number of other international victories, most recently in the Chicago marathon three weeks ago.

"I'm looking forward to the next few weeks. It's time to reflect and it's time to celebrate. I haven't had the chance to sit down and think about everything that's happened this year, after Beijing it was straight to Chicago and then here. I'll save the reflecting for when I get home though, I'm in New York, I won and I've got a couple of Aussies here to celebrate with, it couldn't get any better."
