Springfield children glimpse into world of deaf people

Release Date: 14 November 2007

On Thursday 15 November, an inspiring theatre production is set to challenge Springfield school students' perceptions of disability in the build up to International Day of People with a Disability.

Heads UP!, written and performed by former All Saints star Alex Jones will provide local children with a unique glimpse into the world of being blind and deaf.

“The hands-on cabaret style show helps students understand how people can communicate without sight and sound,” Mr Jones said.

“Children join dramatic workshops where they learn how to use their eyes instead of their ears and body language over spoken words.”

Chertsey Primary School is hosting the production which includes dance, mime, sign-singing, (a sign-language translation of songs) and improvisation, along with an insightful question and answer session with Mr Jones.

“Heads UP! is a fun way of teaching students about a serious matter,” added Minister for Disability Services Kristina Keneally.

“It will hopefully help children understand that people with a disability are major achievers in all walks of life.

“The show is part of a month-long Don't DIS my ABILITY event program to mark International Day of People with a Disability on 3 December.  More than 150 events are being held across NSW during November and December.

“International Day of People with a Disability celebrates the diversity, achievements and abilities of people with a disability,” she said.

Information about International Day of People with a Disability and its events program is available at www.internationaldayofpeoplewithadisability.com.au.
