About us

International Day of People with a Disability (IDPWD) is designated by the United Nations as a time to celebrate and recognise the achievements, contributions and abilities of people with a disability and is celebrated on December 3 each year.

In NSW, International Day of People with a Disability is celebrated throughout November and December with the Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign, proudly supported by the NSW Government and Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Department of Human Services NSW. Events are held throughout metropolitan and regional NSW and in 2008 there were more than 100 events held across the state.

Don’t DIS my ABILITY is about changing misconceptions surrounding disability and creating an environment that encourages participation in careers, leisure pursuits and social activities. Ambassadors are selected as role models to support this campaign from the arts, sports and business.

This year’s United Nations theme for International Day of People with a Disability is “Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world” which aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with a disability.
