International Day of People with a Disability is designated by the United Nations as a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions and the abilities of people with a disability around the world. This year's theme is "Dignity and justice for all of us". It aims to recognise the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family are the foundations of freedom, justice and peace in the world.
In NSW, the Don't DIS my ABILITY campaign is celebrated throughout November and December each year. In 2008, more than 150 events will be held across the state and this year's program includes cultural, arts, sporting and community events.
The Don't DIS my ABILITY campaign aims to demonstrate that people with a disability lead productive and exciting lives and promotes inclusion, understanding and acceptance. The chances are that you will know at least one person with a disability — probably more. Whether they are family, friends or neighbours — they are the reason we celebrate on 3 December each year.
Keep your eye out for the Don't DIS my ABILITY ambassadors who are outstanding examples of what people with a disability achieve. They will be attending and speaking at numerous regional and metropolitan events across the state.
I would like to thank the ambassadors for their support as well as the hundreds of community groups, arts organisations, local councils, government organisations, schools and disability groups who deliver events across the state.
Let's celebrate International Day of People with a Disability 2008 together!
The Hon. Paul Lynch MP
Minister for Disability Services
